Colorado has implemented one of the most stringent gun laws in the United States, following Governor Jared Polis’s recent signing of a comprehensive bill aimed at regulating the purchase, sale, and manufacture of semi-automatic firearms. The law requires individuals to complete a 12-hour safety course and pass a background check through their county sheriff before obtaining a firearm eligibility card, which is necessary to buy a gun.
This legislation, which takes effect in August 2026, is seen as a response to the ongoing public health crisis of gun violence, notably championed by bill sponsor and state Rep. Tom Sullivan, whose son was a victim of the Aurora theater shooting. However, gun rights advocates, including the Colorado State Shooting Association, oppose the law, claiming it infringes on constitutional rights and plans to pursue legal action against it.
