Rhode Island reports a concerning trend of deer-vehicle collisions, with Tiverton leading the state with 103 incidents in 2024, accounting for nearly 18% of the local police’s total motor-vehicle crash responses. To tackle this issue, a University of Rhode Island professor is conducting a study to identify “roadkill hotspots,” while the state’s Department of Environmental Management is working to expand successful hunting programs demonstrated to reduce crashes in other towns.
With a total of 1,347 deer-car collisions reported last year, a collaborative approach combining hunting regulation adjustments and community engagement is underway. Residents are encouraged to report wildlife roadkill via a new online survey, which could aid in developing safer road designs and animal passages, ultimately making roads safer for both people and deer.
