Amanda Parezo is on a mission to make Old City Philadelphia more accessible to those with disabilities, a cause spurred by her own life-changing experience after being shot in May 2021. Since the tragic day when a stray bullet left her paralyzed, she has encountered significant barriers navigating the historic neighborhood’s cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks, which hinder her ability to enjoy local businesses and community life.
With advocating for change as her new focus, Parezo works alongside local leaders, including councilmember Mark Squilla, to introduce portable ramps in the area. Although some businesses, like Café Ole, have started making accommodations, many still lack the necessary accessibility features—highlighting the pressing need for improved infrastructure for individuals with mobility challenges in Old City.
