Officer Justified in Shooting Man with BB Gun

A Redstone Township police officer acted justifiably in shooting and killing 27-year-old Christopher Hackney, who was armed with an “extremely realistic” Airsoft BB gun, according to Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele. The incident occurred on January 28 during a welfare check after Hackney threatened the officer while shouldering the weapon, which could easily be mistaken for a real firearm.

DA Aubele’s investigation revealed that Hackney had made previous statements about “suicide by cop” and was intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit. Though no body camera footage was available, the assessment determined that the use of deadly force was reasonable under the circumstances, leading to the conclusion that no criminal charges will be filed against the officer involved.
