Two Capitol Police officers, Michael Rhinewalt and Stephen Frederick, are charged with manslaughter following the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Jaylen Lewis during a traffic stop in September 2022. A Hinds County grand jury determined their claim of self-defense was unfounded, leading to indictment and a $100,000 bond set for Rhinewalt, while Frederick has since resigned from the department.
In addition to the manslaughter charges, Rhinewalt is linked to another case involving two aggravated assault charges related to an earlier shooting in August 2022. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has implemented new accountability measures, including the use of body cameras for Capitol Police officers, in response to concerns over officer conduct.
