Chicago Bans Jan. 6 Rioters from City Employment

The Chicago City Council has enacted an ordinance that prohibits individuals convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots from securing employment with the city. Passed by a significant vote of 44-3, this new rule instructs the Commissioner of Human Resources to reject all job applications from those with such convictions, reinforcing the city’s commitment to upholding democratic values.

Only three council members opposed the measure, highlighting a strong consensus on this issue. Governor J.B. Pritzker had earlier taken similar action at the state level, aligning with the sentiment that those who participated in the violent disruption of the democratic process should not serve in government roles. This ordinance comes in the context of over 50 individuals in Illinois being convicted or charged related to the Capitol events, many of whom received pardons from former President Trump shortly after taking office.
