City Worker with Illegal Gun Will Not Be Terminated

A report from Chicago’s Inspector General reveals that a city worker caught with an illegal firearm while on duty will not face termination. Although Inspector General Deborah Witzburg recommended firing the unnamed construction laborer, officials from the Department of Water Management decided to deliver only a reprimand, citing the employee’s successful completion of their apprenticeship program and emphasizing the importance of personal context in their decision.

The incident occurred during a traffic stop where police discovered the unlicensed weapon after the laborer opened their bag to retrieve identification. While this situation led to an arrest, the charges were ultimately dropped, and city officials stated that the stop did not impact the worker’s performance or pose risks to colleagues or the public. This decision reflects a broader commitment within the department to foster a supportive environment and offer rehabilitation opportunities, acknowledging that personal mistakes should not overshadow professional potential.
