In a recent seizure, Haitian police discovered two boxes containing 12 assault rifles and 14 pistols, which had journeyed nearly 1,200 kilometers from Fort Lauderdale to Haiti, obscured among food and clothing shipments.
The BBC’s analysis reveals that the trafficking network exploits vulnerabilities in the US gun sales system, including the use of “straw buyers” to circumvent the UN embargo on arms. As gangs in Haiti gain control of over 85% of the capital, the ongoing influx of firearms exacerbates the crisis, leading to record violence and instability affecting over a million people.
