DOJ Cancels Grants for Violence and Addiction Programs

The Department of Justice has canceled hundreds of grants aimed at gun-violence prevention, addiction recovery, and victim advocacy, disrupting vital community programs across the nation. The decision, communicated in a memo from Maureen Henneberg, the acting head of the Office of Justice Programs, cites misalignment with the current administration’s priorities following a review process, leading to immediate termination notices sent to affected organizations.

The cut affects millions of dollars previously allocated to initiatives including violence intervention programs and opioid prevention efforts, significantly impacting groups like the Community Resources for Justice, which stands to lose $37 million. This unprecedented move raises concerns among program administrators about future funding and support, as the DOJ plans to redirect finances to align with a focus on combating violent crime and protecting victims of trafficking and assault.
