Tyris Jones, a 25-year-old man shot by Rockford police nearly five years ago, is found guilty of multiple charges, including attempted vehicular hijacking and aggravated fleeing. The jury’s decision, reached on April 23, 2025, could result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years as Jones had previously led law enforcement on a high-speed chase involving several agencies before crashing his vehicle.
On October 2, 2020, police confronted Jones at a relative’s home while he was wanted for three arrest warrants and suspected in a deadly drive-by shooting. After trying to hijack another vehicle post-chase, Jones was shot by officers, who were later cleared of wrongdoing. He is scheduled for another court appearance on May 23, where he faces ongoing charges including first-degree murder.
