The initiative, introduced by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and supported by local stakeholders, emphasizes the importance of safe gun storage as a preventive measure against youth accessing firearms.
According to Deputy Secretary William Lassiter, about 75% of these incidents involve students obtaining guns from their own homes, often because adults have failed to secure them properly. With the Wake County Public School System being the first to adopt the program, officials are hopeful that educational resources and communication strategies will reduce the number of unsecured firearms and enhance safety across campuses statewide.
