Education Enhances In-Home Gun Safety Awareness

A recent national study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies 2025 Meeting highlights the crucial role of education in enhancing gun safety awareness among parents. The research shows that access to information about firearm safety increases the likelihood of parents asking about guns in other households by 40%. Notably, while only 16% of caregivers without prior education about guns inquired about firearms, this figure rises dramatically to 79% among those who received information from diverse sources such as friends, family, or health care providers.

The findings are particularly significant given that firearms are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. The study emphasizes the need for ongoing education, revealing that most parents—less than 9%—do not discuss firearm safety with their health care providers. Dr. Maya Haasz of Children’s Hospital Colorado stresses that fostering conversations about gun safety can create a safer environment for families, especially with young children at risk of accidentally handling firearms.
