Starting May 2, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) presents the Gun Violence Memorial Project (GVMP), a poignant tribute to lives impacted by gun violence. This exhibition features four glass houses made from 700 clear bricks, symbolizing the average weekly gun-related deaths in the U.S. in 2019, and holds personal remembrance objects donated by families honoring their loved ones. The project is designed not only to honor the deceased but also to foster conversations about the ongoing toll of gun violence in America.
Jova Lynne, Co-Director of MOCAD, emphasizes the importance of art as a means for social change, highlighting the exhibition’s role in bringing community awareness to the epidemic. Visitors can engage with stories shared by family members and interact with a resource library that broadens understanding of gun violence. The GVMP runs through August 10 and includes events with participating artists discussing the intersection of art and social justice, making this a critical opportunity for public reflection and dialogue.
