Inquiry Requested into Gun Industry’s Data Practices

Gun Owners for Safety has formally requested that federal agencies investigate the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) secret sharing of sensitive customer data, which reportedly spanned nearly two decades. The inquiry stems from a ProPublica investigation revealing that the NSSF collected personal information on gun buyers without their knowledge or consent, using it for political purposes while posing as a protector of their privacy.

Among the allegations, it’s noted that major manufacturers like Glock and Smith & Wesson have contributed hundreds of thousands of names and details to a database aimed at driving electoral support for preferred candidates. This database, enhanced by the controversial firm Cambridge Analytica during the 2016 election cycle, included not just basic contact information, but also intricate details about consumers, raising significant concerns about privacy violations and deceptive business practices within the gun industry.
