The Liberty City Youth Summit, scheduled for May 8, aims to educate local youth on vital topics such as gun violence, gang prevention, and interactions with law enforcement. Co-chaired by community activist Rolando Hallmon, the event responds to the tragic shooting of 9-year-old Sherdavia Jenkins in 2006, which has steered efforts to raise awareness and action against violence in the predominantly Black neighborhood. This year’s summit is expected to draw over 100 participants, as Hallmon highlights a significant drop in local homicides from 72 in 2020 to 53 in 2023.
Key activities include performances by nearly 15 Miami-Dade County deputies who will use skits to educate youth on understanding criminal charges and the dangers of fleeing from police. Sharon Frazier, founder of the organizing group, emphasizes the importance of such dialogues, especially in light of reports showing Black children are disproportionately reported to law enforcement. The summit is strategically hosted before summer, aiming to engage youth proactively and ensure their safety during a period often associated with increased violence.
