Inquiry Requested on Gun Data Sharing Practices

A group representing firearms owners has formally requested an investigation from the FBI, FTC, and ATF regarding the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) alleged practice of secretly sharing sensitive customer data for political ends. Citing a ProPublica investigation, the group claims that the NSSF transferred private information about gun buyers—such as names, addresses, and even personal details—to political operatives without their consent, undermining the privacy rights of firearm purchasers.

This request comes amidst growing concerns over the implications of such data collection practices, particularly as the NSSF has connections to multiple major firearm manufacturers, including Glock and Smith & Wesson. The organization has not responded to inquiries about these allegations, which could signify potential violations of federal and state privacy laws. As reported, the NSSF’s activities reportedly included using this data to enhance political campaigns, including those aimed at supporting Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
