Contra Costa Sheriff’s Volunteer Convicted of Gun Charges

John Michael King, a volunteer with the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, pleads no contest to multiple gun charges after taking thousands of gun parts and ammunition from a police gun range over more than ten years. His plea agreement includes a 90-day house arrest and a two-year probation period, reflecting the serious nature of the offenses, which include possession of an assault weapon.

The investigation revealed that items King took had been marked for destruction and involved crucial evidence from criminal cases. Investigators later discovered a stash of illegal firearms, including presumed “ghost guns,” at his ex-wife’s home, raising safety concerns that had previously been highlighted by her communications with sheriff’s officials.
