Experts highlight that initiating safety conversations within families can significantly reduce the risk of accidental shootings. Ashley Farrens, trauma program manager at Nebraska Medicine, points out that children are often more familiar with firearms than many adults realize, making education on proper handling and storage essential. As part of their initiative, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is providing nearly 200 free gun locks to local residents, encouraging safe practices to ensure guns are secured away from children.
