Juneau Assembly to Vote on Body Camera Footage Release

The Juneau Assembly is set to vote on an ordinance requiring the Juneau Police Department to release body camera footage from officer-involved shootings within 30 days. This proposal comes after community advocates called for increased transparency following two deadly shootings by police last year, during which footage was not made public for over 30 days.

Juneau Police Chief Derek Bos supports the proposed policy, expressing a commitment to release footage as swiftly as possible, ideally within 15 days. However, the ordinance does include provisions allowing the city manager and police chief to extend that deadline under certain circumstances, which has raised concerns among some Assembly members and the city’s Systemic Racism Review Committee about potential delays in public access. Public testimony will be welcomed before the final vote on May 19.
