During the tense standoff, one boy allegedly squeezed the trigger of the handgun, although it did not fire. Officers managed to distract the children with non-lethal rounds before safely retrieving the weapon, emphasizing that they did not view the boys as offenders but rather as children in a dangerous situation. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office noted this was not the first time they had responded to the home, having been called over 50 times for previous domestic issues.
