The Columbus Police Department (CPD) unveils ‘Operation Overlook,’ a month-long initiative designed to significantly reduce crime in high-risk areas by focusing on teens involved with guns and drugs. Chief Stoney Mathis emphasizes community cooperation, urging parents to search their children’s belongings for illegal weapons to foster safety, stating, “If they find guns or drugs – even if the gun is stolen – call us and we will come pick it up. No questions asked.”
With 109 detectives reassigned to the streets in uniform, CPD aims to apply investigative skills proactively rather than reactively. Mayor Skip Henderson supports the initiative, affirming that all necessary resources will be provided to ensure its success. The police seek to reinforce accountability among parents and community members, arguing that their involvement is crucial in preventing crime before it happens, with the clear message: “If parents don’t hold their kids accountable, the law will.”
