Billions in Military Equipment Lost or Abandoned

The U.S. military has incurred significant financial losses from lost or left-behind equipment, with one of the largest instances being the abandonment of $7 billion worth of assets during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. This includes a range of military hardware, from vehicles to munitions, raising concerns over firepower potentially falling into the hands of adversaries.

Among the notable examples is a 2024 incident involving a missing F-35 jet, valued at around $110 million, that continued flying after its pilot ejected, resulting in a costly search and recovery effort. To illustrate how extensive these losses are, reports indicate that nearly a million spare parts worth $85 million have also gone unaccounted for, illustrating a broader issue of mismanagement within military inventories.
