Maine Lawmakers Eye Enhanced Gun Storage Regulations

Maine’s Legislature prepares to debate a significant bill aimed at improving gun storage laws in response to the recent accidental shooting death of a 4-year-old boy in Lewiston. This incident adds urgency to LD 1120, which seeks to extend legal consequences for unsafe firearm storage, proposing to hold gun owners accountable when minors gain access to both loaded and unloaded firearms.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Daniel Sayre, not only broadens the age limit for enforcement but also increases penalties for those who provide firearms to individuals prohibited from possessing them. Notably, research indicates that secure storage can dramatically reduce the risk of unintentional injuries and deaths among children. The proposal comes amid strong public support, with 79% of Maine voters favoring secure storage measures to prevent future tragedies.
