Governor Jared Polis has signed House Bill 1171, which prohibits individuals with multiple auto theft convictions from owning firearms in Colorado. This law classifies first-degree motor vehicle theft as a felony, barring those who have been convicted of vehicle theft or unauthorized use at least twice from possessing a gun.
Supported by both sides of the political aisle, the bill also allows individuals who have lost their gun rights under this new regulation to petition for reinstatement after a decade. In his statement, Polis emphasized the law’s aim to keep firearms out of the hands of repeat offenders, highlighting its importance in enhancing public safety in the state.
