Gun Crime Drops Significantly in Kalamazoo in 2024

Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Safety (KDPS) reports a significant decrease in gun crime for 2024, highlighting a proactive approach to law enforcement. Non-fatal shootings have dropped by 29%, and homicides have plummeted from 22 to 10, thanks to new strategies focusing on identifying illegal firearm carriers and enhancing community cooperation.

To sustain this positive trend, KDPS emphasizes data-driven policing, weekly inter-agency meetings, and ongoing communication with community violence prevention partners. Captain Mike Ferguson states their goal is clear: “We want that to be zero,” referring to their commitment to eliminating gun crime from Kalamazoo County streets.
