Waterbury Seeks $2M Grant to Combat Youth Gun Violence

The Waterbury Health Department, supported by the Police Department, is pursuing a $2 million state grant aimed at addressing gun violence among the city’s youth. Describing gun violence as “an infectious disease,” officials highlight that incidents primarily affect young Black males aged 18 to 34, often arising from personal disputes despite overall declines in violent crime.

The proposed funding would establish a “Gun Violence Prevention Partnership,” which includes various community stakeholders aimed at implementing evidence-based intervention strategies. With a troubling record of 343 gunshot injuries over five years, the initiative plans targeted programs for youth and seeks to enhance coordination among existing services. This substantial grant application represents 80% of the available state funding; if awarded, it would signify a crucial step towards curbing gun violence in Waterbury.
