Mahoning County residents can now obtain free gun locks as part of a new initiative aimed at enhancing firearm safety and decreasing gun-related tragedies. The distribution, led by the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office and the Mental Health and Recovery Board, emphasizes the importance of secure firearm storage, especially amid alarming statistics where firearms accounted for 58% of suicide deaths in the county this year alone.
The gun locks are available at the Prosecutor’s Office in Youngstown today and later this week, with additional community events slated for the year. This safety effort is backed by the national Project ChildSafe program and includes extra locks supplied by the Department of Veterans Affairs, highlighting a proactive approach to mental health crises and responsible gun ownership.
