Proposed Texas Bill Alters Castle Doctrine for Homeowners

A proposed modification to Texas’ “Castle Doctrine” seeks to require homeowners to retreat before using deadly force against intruders, raising concerns among residents about personal safety. Introduced by State Rep. Terry Meza, House Bill 196 amends existing laws established in 2007, which currently allow the use of deadly force without the obligation to retreat if homeowners believe their lives are threatened.

While Meza argues that the current law emboldens people to take justice into their own hands, critics, including gun store owners, believe such changes would unfairly advantage criminals. With over 9,000 bills expected to be filed during the legislative session, experts caution that Meza’s proposal may struggle for attention and support, particularly as she navigates her role as a relatively new legislator.
