Toms River Murder Suspect Claims Self-Defense in Stabbing

Steven McNeill, a 32-year-old man, claims he was acting in self-defense when he fatally stabbed Raniek Mendez and injured Roderick Seward during a fight in a Toms River home. At a recent detention hearing, McNeill’s attorney cited New Jersey’s “Castle Doctrine,” arguing that McNeill was justified in using deadly force because he stayed at his girlfriend’s home the night of the altercation. However, a prosecutor countered that the doctrine does not apply since McNeill was not the homeowner, raising doubts about his self-defense claim.

During the hearing, McNeill revealed he felt threatened, stating he was “looking down the barrel of a gun,” while also contending that his attacker, Seward, initiated the violent encounter. As the court heard conflicting details, including the timing of when a gun was brandished, both parties acknowledged the nuances of the case. Judge Wendel E. Daniels has yet to decide whether to release McNeill or keep him in jail without bail as he faces serious charges, including murder and attempted murder.
