Burt Township sophomore William Paul plays a pivotal role in securing a grant of $10,673 to enhance deer habitats within the school’s forest. This funding is part of a larger initiative by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which has recently awarded nearly $150,000 across 15 projects in the Upper Peninsula aimed at supporting the struggling deer population.
The grant will facilitate significant improvements over approximately 600 acres, including the planting of 425 trees, such as apple and oak varieties. Michigan DNR Spokesperson John Pepin emphasizes the importance of such habitat restoration efforts, noting their long-term benefits for wildlife and outdoor recreation. “Anytime we can improve habitat for deer, that helps the deer herd, which in turn helps hunting prospects,” Pepin states. Paul’s commitment to this project ensures a sustainable future for both the local deer population and community engagement in wildlife conservation.
