Feinberg researchers tackle gun violence as health issue

Researchers at the Feinberg School of Medicine are framing gun violence as a public health crisis, emphasizing the social determinants that contribute to this issue, such as poverty and unemployment. Their recent studies reveal that many victims and perpetrators of gun violence share similar backgrounds, straddling the line between victimhood and violence. This complex dynamic underlines the urgency for a new approach in addressing gun ownership and safety practices.

In a move to promote responsible gun ownership, Feinberg has implemented a $3.3 million initiative providing free firearm storage locks to patients, alongside physician training on discussing safe practices. Their innovative “nudge+” strategy aims to enhance conversations about firearm safety during medical appointments, potentially saving lives. As Columbia Prof. Anne Stey noted, building trust with patients is crucial in the recovery process, especially when addressing the social conditions perpetuating violence.
