Gun Industry Faces Accountability Amid Rising Violence

The firearms industry is increasingly losing its long-held immunity from liability related to gun violence, as recent state legislation and civil lawsuits begin to take effect. Following a series of high-profile shootings, including a tragic incident at Apalachee High School in Georgia that claimed four lives, states are enacting new laws aimed at holding gun manufacturers accountable for the impact of their products on public safety.

Notably, a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2019 allowed a lawsuit against Remington Arms over its marketing practices linked to the Sandy Hook tragedy to advance, resulting in a substantial settlement. With at least nine states passing laws that enable legal action against the gun industry, parallels are drawn to successful lawsuits against other sectors, like Big Tobacco, suggesting a potential shift in how the gun violence crisis is addressed.
