Baltimore Libraries Offer Free Gun Locks for Safety

In an effort to enhance community safety, Baltimore County Public Libraries offer free gun safety locks throughout June as part of National Gun Violence Awareness Month. This initiative, a collaboration with the Baltimore County Department of Health, aims to reduce the risks of suicide and gun violence by promoting secure firearm storage. With firearms involved in 47% of suicide deaths in the county, library officials stress the importance of taking proactive measures for community well-being.

Sonia Alcántara-Antoine, CEO of the library, highlights the vital role libraries play in providing resources beyond books, including mental health support through social workers. The locks, available at all 18 branches, come with instructions and crisis prevention information, and no residency proof is required to obtain one. Following June, residents can continue to access gun safety locks via public health vending machines, further emphasizing the library’s commitment to safety and prevention initiatives.
