Ohio House Dems Renew Call for Gun Control Legislation

Ohio House Democrats are once again advocating for gun control legislation, despite an uphill battle against a Republican supermajority that has favored expanding gun rights. The proposed measures include a red-flag law and a ten-day waiting period for firearm purchases, highlighted during National Gun Violence Prevention Month. Representative Darnell Brewer emphasizes that gun violence impacts both Democratic and Republican constituencies, stating, “This is not a blue issue. This is not a red issue. This is an Ohio issue.”

Democrats reference staggering statistics from Everytown for Gun Safety, noting that gun violence costs Ohio $22.3 billion annually, averaging $1,904 per resident. While they acknowledge existing GOP support for some measures, such as tax incentives for firearm safety courses, many of their other initiatives have been largely ignored. Representative Cecil Thomas expresses frustration over the lack of action, asserting that their efforts are serious and vital in the face of rising gun violence across the state.
