On June 14, leaders from the Duluth community converged at Central Hillside Park for a ‘Stop Gun Violence’ rally, coinciding with the city’s proclamation of June 3 as ‘Gun Violence Awareness Day.’ The event took on a poignant tone after a series of tragic shootings earlier that day, making the need for action even more pressing. Community leader Miss LaVenda Vann emphasized, “We have a voice, let’s use it to prevent one less murder, one less suicide, one less accident, and one less victim.”
Mayor Roger Reinert, visibly affected by the events, reflected on the personal impact of gun violence, mentioning friends who were victims of recent attacks. Participants donned orange, the color symbolizing gun violence awareness, highlighting a collective commitment to addressing this critical issue. Attendees at the rally called for unified voices in fighting against gun violence at every level, from local neighborhoods to the national stage.
