Despite a recent crackdown that led to the seizure of over 2,535 illegal weapons in Sheikhupura and 2,393 in Lahore during just the first three months of 2025, many firearms are later declared legal on paper, casting doubt on the efficiency of law enforcement efforts. Local residents express concerns for their safety, prompting individuals like Muhammad Usman to carry legally licensed firearms amidst rampant crime involving smuggled weapons.
Authorities acknowledge the presence of illegal arms in local communities and reportedly recognize many of the individuals involved in the trade. However, pressure from higher-ups often inhibits proactive action against these illegal dealers, who frequently furnish fake licenses to mask their operations. The Punjab Home Department has initiated a strict policy against bogus arms licenses, leading to the suspension of several arms dealers. Home Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal emphasizes a “zero-tolerance” approach to this issue, yet the persistent smuggling and illegal trade continue to undermine public safety and confidence in law enforcement.
