Lafayette Reports Decrease in Shootings Amid Violence Concerns

Lafayette police confirm a notable decrease in overall shootings this year, despite recent incidents that have raised alarm within the community. Police Chief Paul Trouard reports a reduction from 36 shootings during the same timeframe last year to just 25 in 2025, indicating a positive trend in public safety efforts. This decline is particularly significant following two shootings in June, including one at a grocery store that left two men hospitalized.

Chief Trouard attributes this positive shift to enhanced community engagement and proactive recruitment strategies, emphasizing the necessity of meeting potential recruits in their own environments. Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet echoed these sentiments, noting that community safety is crucial for local prosperity. As investigations continue into the recent shootings, the police department’s community-focused approach may hold the key to maintaining this downward trend in violence.
