Democrats Criticize Gun Rights for Convicted Individuals

Congressional Democrats are voicing strong opposition to the Trump administration’s decision to restore firearm rights to ten individuals, including actor Mel Gibson, who has a history of legal issues. Senator Patty Murray and five other lawmakers contend that this move undermines Congress’s authority and circumvents regulations designed to prevent those convicted of serious crimes from obtaining weapons.

The letter sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi argues that shifting the power to reinstate gun rights from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to the Justice Department is a violation of the separation of powers doctrine. The lawmakers highlight the ongoing problem of gun violence in the nation and assert that Congress has consistently restricted the ATF from processing such applications in federal funding bills since 1993.
