San Jose City Leaders Reject Police Auditor’s Access Request

San Jose city officials have dismissed a plea from the Independent Police Auditor, Eddie Aubrey, to gain more access to police shooting investigations and minor use-of-force cases. During a recent city council meeting, the mayor, police chief, and other officials unanimously opposed the move, arguing that it could compromise criminal investigations while adding strain to an already understaffed police department.

Aubrey’s request was part of his annual auditing report, aimed at enhancing oversight amid rising calls for police accountability. He highlights that similar practices are standard in cities like Oakland and Sacramento, emphasizing that timely access to information—including body-camera footage—could significantly improve community trust. Despite this setback, Aubrey remains optimistic, noting that the council accepted other policy changes that could still enhance police oversight.
