Michigan is intensifying its efforts to combat gun violence with the support of new federal grants aimed at local community programs. Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasizes that “Every Michigander deserves to feel safe,” as the state opens a funding window until July 15 under the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program, which has already allocated over $6.6 million since January 2024 for 19 impactful initiatives statewide.
Among the successful projects are Saginaw’s H.E.L.P. program, which focuses on juvenile intervention and mentoring, and Berrien County’s Night Court program that promotes discussions on personal development among youth. These initiatives reflect a collaborative strategy involving government and community organizations, with the goal of significantly reducing gun violence through targeted, community-driven solutions.
