New Laws in South Dakota Take Effect July 1

On July 1, over 200 new laws signed by Governor Larry Rhoden will come into effect in South Dakota, with 197 of them heralding significant policy changes. Among the notable laws are SB 62 and SB 63, which impose mandatory reporting requirements for governmental misconduct and create protections for whistleblowers, reflecting an intensified focus on government accountability.

Additionally, SB 100 permits college students with enhanced concealed carry permits to bring firearms on campus—a move Rhoden defends as a way to uphold Second Amendment rights. The legislative shift also includes a vetoed bill aimed at providing child care assistance for eligible employees, underscoring the contentious nature of some policy debates this session.
