Family Calls for Independent Investigation of Officer’s Death

The family of Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera, who was tragically shot in the back by her partner during a pursuit, is demanding an independent investigation by the Illinois State Police. Their attorney, Antonio Romanucci, argues that the Chicago Police Department’s narrative surrounding the incident “does not pass the smell test,” highlighting serious concerns about the circumstances of her death and the disciplinary history of Officer Carlos Baker, who was involved in the shooting.

Rivera’s mother, Yolanda Rivera, expressed her urgent need for clarity, stating, “I need to understand what happened that night.” The family is particularly troubled by Baker’s previous complaints during his probationary period, which Romanucci claims should have precluded him from serving as an officer. As they search for answers, they are requesting the release of body camera footage and Baker’s full disciplinary record, emphasizing the need for transparency in this tragic case.
