Research Funding for Gun Violence Faces Urgent Call

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen complicates efforts to regulate gun safety and expose the pressing need for extensive research into gun violence. With gun deaths reaching staggering levels—over 45,000 in 2020 alone—efforts to create effective policies are hindered by a two-decade gap in federal support for gun violence research, largely stemming from the Dickey Amendment.

Philanthropic organizations, like Arnold Ventures, have stepped in to fund research, awarding over $21 million for various projects since 2018. However, experts estimate that a comprehensive five-year research initiative would require approximately $600 million to gather crucial data on gun violence and inform public policy, positioning this as a critical public health issue that demands immediate attention and adequate funding.
