New Gunfire Penalties in Missouri for July 4th Celebrations

This July 4th marks the first Independence Day in Missouri under Blair’s Law, which criminalizes celebratory gunfire throughout the state. This law responds to community safety concerns, particularly following several tragic incidents involving accidental injuries from falling bullets. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office is actively encouraging residents to report reckless gunfire, emphasizing that offenders will be prosecuted accordingly, with penalties escalating from misdemeanors to felonies for repeat offenders.

In 2025, law enforcement officials have already charged seven individuals under this new statute, illustrating a zero-tolerance approach to gun safety during holiday celebrations. Additionally, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is ramping up efforts to ensure safe travel, having recorded over 1,300 traffic crashes last Independence Day, resulting in 14 fatalities. Authorities urge Missourians to celebrate safely, reminding them that celebratory gunfire not only poses legal consequences but also endangers lives.
