Following the recent tragic River North shooting that left 18 injured and four dead, advocates are urging Illinois lawmakers to hold gun manufacturers financially accountable for the costs associated with gun violence. Currently, Illinois spends an estimated $18.6 billion annually on firearm injury and death, yet manufacturers remain shielded from liability for the harmful impacts of their products, while taxpayers shoulder the burden of medical and rehabilitative costs.
The proposed Responsibility in Firearm Legislation Act (RIFL) aims to create a restitution fund financed by gun makers based on the frequency of their products being used in violent incidents. This act seeks to restore accountability and incentivize manufacturers to develop safer firearms, ultimately reducing the financial strain on Illinois and its citizens. Advocates stress the urgent need for legislative change, as gun violence consistently ranks as the leading cause of death among children and teens in the state.
