Most Crime Guns in California Trace Back to Other States

The California Department of Justice recently released a report indicating that 65 percent of firearms recovered in criminal investigations this year come from out-of-state origins, raising concerns about interstate gun trafficking. This trend underscores the significant role that firearms from regions with fewer regulations play in California’s gun crime, as only 26.4 percent of recovered guns could be traced back to legal California dealers.

The report also highlights that 46,996 guns were recovered in connection with a crime in 2024, with over 9,249 of these being unserialized ‘ghost guns’ that cannot be traced. This ongoing issue points to the effectiveness of California’s stringent gun laws, yet also reveals that an average of 3,400 firearm deaths still occur annually in the state. Understanding the origins and tracing patterns of these weapons is crucial, given the alarming statistics on gun violence.
