JSO Officer Hurt, Suspect Killed After Chase in Jacksonville

An armed robbery suspect is dead after engaging with law enforcement during a foot chase in Northwest Jacksonville. The incident occurred Wednesday morning near Soutel Drive and Norfolk Boulevard, following a robbery at a local business where the 20-year-old suspect demanded cash while armed and masked.

As officers responded, one officer, identified as Luis Mercado, pursued the suspect. During the confrontation, the suspect fired at Mercado, hitting him in the leg, before the officer returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. Mercado, who has been with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for four years, managed to apply a tourniquet to his own injury before being transported to the hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
