Philly Strike Ends; Waymo Launches Testing in City

The municipal workers’ strike in Philadelphia, led by District Council 33, came to an end early Wednesday morning, with members agreeing to a wage increase of 3% per year over the next three years. This settlement falls short of the 5% annual raise workers had sought, prompting some discontent among union members, who faced the prospect of missing their first paycheck since the strike began. Trash pickup that had accumulated during the eight-day work stoppage is set to resume as workers return to their posts.

In a separate development, Waymo is introducing self-driving cars to Philadelphia this summer, albeit with human drivers in the initial phases of its “road trip” series. The Alphabet-owned company plans to test its AI-driven vehicles in challenging areas like Center City, although there are currently no plans for an autonomous taxi service. This testing marks a notable step as the city grapples with its history of innovation and public sentiment towards automation.
