Debunking Claims Against Concealed-Carry Permit Holders

The Heritage Foundation responds to a recent study by the Violence Policy Center, which claims concealed-carry permit holders pose a significant risk to public safety. The Foundation argues that the data misrepresents the facts, noting that concealed-carry permit holders accounted for only 801 firearm-related homicides over a 15-year span, roughly 0.7% of all such incidents, despite the number of permit holders increasing by over 300% since 2007.

The analysis provides examples of concealed-carry permit holders successfully intervening in potentially violent situations, including a case in California where a permit holder stopped a kidnapping. With an estimated 500,000 to 3 million defensive gun uses occurring each year in the U.S., the foundation asserts that concealed-carry permit holders play a crucial role in preventing violent crimes, further challenging the negative portrayal of their impact on community safety.
