Tremont Residents Debate Deer Hunting Options

In a recent public hearing, residents of Tremont expressed both support and concern regarding proposed deer hunting options aimed at managing the local deer population. Three options were discussed, including a resident-only hunt and expanded archery season, following the recent failure of LD1438, a bill to legalize hunting on Mount Desert Island. Notably, approximately 22 residents participated, with comments ranging from urgent calls to “thin the herd” to fears of unsafe hunting practices amidst the community.

Among the voices was Alex Johnson, a fifth-generation bow hunter advocating for archery, while opponents like wildlife photographer George Sanker emphasized the need for a deer-friendly environment. The Select Board is set to revisit the issue and potentially put it to a vote, highlighting community divisions over wildlife management strategies and safety concerns, particularly as the Seawall area has reported significant deer traffic.
